Melasma Treatments in Albuquerque

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a condition in which brown patches appear on the face. This can be due to any major hormonal change such as what occurs during pregnancy. It is often called the hormonal mask and is often worsened by the sun, birth control pills and other medications. Trauma and certain procedures can also worsen melasma.

Both men and women can get melasma, although women are much more likely than men to develop this condition.

The darkened spots look more like a smudge and can look yellow, brown, or gray-brown, or black. They most often appear on the forehead, temples, nose, cheeks, and chin.

In women, melasma often fades on its own after pregnancy or after an affected woman discontinues birth control pills. Skin lightening creams and only certain types of lasers can help reduce melasma. Many heat-type lasers will actually worsen melasma. At Belleza Med Spa, we have a laser that is specific for melasma.
